This is an introduction to Plasma, a process of creating light sculptures using blown glass and electrified gases that produce an interactive and dynamic light that responds to proximity and touch.
We will cover the basics of creating an airtight vessel for Plasma using various hot glass techniques and shaping methods, discuss guidelines on form and structure, and design considerations, and prepare your sculptures to be filled. We'll refine what you know, add new skills, and bring your ideas to light!

In this comprehensive class, you will learn the fundamentals of hollow sculpting in Borosilicate glass at the torch in order to design plasma lighting. We will cover shaping, texture, and proper seals in order to make simple and complex sculptures. Sculpting techniques will include abstract and figurative forms. Learn to add and design around the electrode and filling tube.

We will cover advanced topics like encasements, inclusions of phosphor, and jacketing as well as problems and design challenges presented by this method of working. Once your glass vessel is complete and checked for leaks, we will put our pieces under vacuum and fill them with noble gasses!

Class time will alternate between demonstration, discussion, and plenty of work time.

You are encouraged but not required to utilize the evening open studio. On the last day, we will light up all of our work and have our own private plasma show. You should come to class with a sketchbook and plenty of ideas. Reference photos are encouraged for you with specific ideas you’d like to pursue. Experience working with hollow glass tubes is required.

Take your sculptures to the next level - add unique light effects with plasma!

Over the course of this workshop, participants will design and fabricate a plasma lamp of their own design while learning about the science of gas discharge tubes in a creative environment. We will consider plasma in the contexts of scientific glassblowing, contemporary art and design through a combination of demonstrations, collaboration, and hands-on learning. Topics covered will include tips for sculpting borosilicate glass for plasma, application of phosphors, safety, gas mixtures, adding electrodes, capacitive coupling, and much more.

This class meets from 9am to 5pm each day, Monday through Friday, with additional studio time Monday through Thursday, from 5pm to 9pm. Materials for participating in the course are included. If you have specific colors you are interested in working with please bring them with you.

But there is much more to plasma sculpture than the finished artwork. Many people wonder: how was it actually made?

A video project, “Creating with the Fourth State of Matter: Plasma Artists in the Studio”, will be shown as part of a film festival at the Glass Art Society 2023 Conference. The film will illuminate the complex process of plasma art by providing an exclusive look into the studio practice of plasma artists from the international community. We will present a compilation of short videos (5 minutes) filmed by each artist in their own studio, to showcase a range of techniques, creative processes, and studio setups. With a focus on the making process, rather than the finished artwork, these videos will each bring a different perspective to various aspects of the plasma art process, including flame-working, gas filling, high voltage power supplies, artistic inspiration, and the unique challenges of combining art with science and technology.
