My work is a colorful exploration and commentary on the human condition. Cognitive, emotional, and spiritual states of being are some of the themes that interest me the most. With gem-like character sculptures, large scale portraits, and illuminated collage I attempt to examine the multiplicity of our being.
Most of the work I create is based in portraiture with a focus on the mind and consciousness. Each piece can be examined individually or within the context of a narrative group. While some sculptures appear comical and ridiculous, others appear more introspective and thoughtful. Each work, both large and small scale, can be appreciated in terms of personality, expression, attitude, and mood. Some solitary beings appear peaceful and contemplative, while others appear to suffer within a frenetic attack of random ideas.
When multiple sculptures are displayed within a group or installation they take on new meaning as they relate to one another. Sculptural elements float through space, loosely associating with one another to suggest new narratives. Recently, I have begun to include text within my installations. Phrases, words, and descriptive titles provide an additional layer of meaning to the narrative. In some cases the sculptures express their own opinions, thoughts, and questions. These expressions suggest feelings and attitude, but the exact subject matter is not always defined.
In regard to the technique and construction of each piece, I am often obsessed with detail and minutiae. Detailed elements encased within layers of transparent glass add information and complexity to the work. I use light in my work as a way to interpret consciousness. Sculptural elements, electrical components, and biological circuitry are the parts that make us whole, but luminosity provides the brilliant, emergent property of being.
